Our team facilitates Photovoice and related trainings online. Our foundational course ‘Talking with Pictures’: Photovoice is based on Laura’s award-winning in-person workshop. Since June 2018, over 200 researchers, faculty, nonprofit staff, clinicians, and photographers have completed ‘Talking with Pictures’ and joined our Photovoice continuing education community.

This interactive, online professional development course provides content, resources and hands-on experience for adapting Photovoice to research, programming, clinical care, and evaluation needs. This interactive online training prepares project staff and research assistants to facilitate Photovoice sessions and provides facilitation content, hands-on experience, and tools. The training focuses on facilitating the four key Photovoice tasks: taking photos, discussing photos, writing captions, and identifying themes. Upon completion, facilitators will be prepared to work collaboratively with Photovoice participants to reach project goals.

This interactive online training/professional development course prepares researchers, program staff and facilitators to plan and facilitate Photovoice from a distance. The course provides examples, resources and hands-on experience through every project stage, from recruitment to introducing Photovoice, producing visuals, discussing and interpreting them, and educating audiences. This interactive online training/professional development trains researchers and facilitators to prepare Photovoice participants to take photos, and feel more at ease and confident with the camera and their photo assignment. With this course you will learn how to choose the best camera for your project, how to confidently work with it and how to help participants understand basics of photography and operate cameras to their advantage. We will also review ways to prepare participants to shoot even before having their cameras in hand. Upon course completion, you will be prepared to facilitate successful participant photo-taking with Photovoice.

Better Pictures with Photovoice II: Mixed Media Communication  New Course!


Enable meaningful participant communication with photos!

Instructor: Erica Belli
3-online sessions, 2 hours each.

This interactive online training/professional development course trains researchers, facilitators, therapists, and photographers how to enter their participants’ world by physically manipulating photographs, enabling meaningful dialog related to challenging experiences. Grounded in real-life experience with migrant youth and women who experienced sex trafficking, the instructor shares arts-based, hands-on techniques that facilitate healing conversations, foster new self-perceptions, and educate. The techniques shared can be helpful with Photovoice participants who present linguistic challenges or other communication barriers, and for therapists interested in exploring photo-based techniques for therapy.

An activist youth activity for ages 10-15

Young Changemakers with a Camera: Photovoice is a community activism activity for youth ages 10-15 that uses a hands-on, participatory approach. In this activity, youths are directed to take photographs of things that matter to them, and share them with peers, family members, and decision makers. The activity will build and strengthen participant skills in research, photography, critical thinking, writing, marketing, and activism

 Activity dates: Timing arranged in collaboration with interested groups of 6-8 participants.

Registration fee: $720 for a group of 6 youth $960 for a group of 8 youth

Learn to engage youth in learning through Photovoice!

Instructor: Stephanie Lloyd, MA
6-online sessions, 1 hour each.

Photovoice is a participatory approach to photography, discussion, writing and outreach that empowers young people to explore their experiences and collaborate for change. In this course, parents and instructors will practice the Photovoice steps and learn how to engage youth in the process. Session topics include: careful photo-taking, photo sharing, and caption writing, selecting photos, exhibiting, and celebrating! Upon completing this training, parents and teachers will have content, handouts and exercises ready to adapt to their instructional and after-school activities.

December 3, 7, and 10 (3:30-5:00 PM, ET) Registration fee: $245 (Early Bird Price) $295 (Full Price).
